Designing and Implementing Explicit Instruction
- Directly state and define word as it will be used in the story before reading
- Show pictures if possible
- Have students repeat word and definition
- Connect word to students' every day experiences
- Discuss prior knowledge of word
- Provide opportunities for active responding. Have students:
- Act out word
- Play pictionary or draw the meaning of the word
- Use verbal responses: repeating the word, answering questions
- Use nonverbal responses: raising hand, using a gesture
- Provide meaningful opportunities for students to use the word throughout the day and review in the future
