Summative Vocabulary Assessment
When providing students with summative assessments, it is important to teach students to approach this assessment and apply test-taking skills in which they are able to find clues to the correct words, such as using context clues and the process of elimination. Students should also be provided with the opportunity to practice with these assessments as they will then be able to build their own confidence when it comes to test-taking that carries a grade or a standardized score. Deliberately using the word "test" when introducing an assessment to students can be highly beneficial as they will grow accustomed to the word and will not be nervous when they hear the word in the future. Debriefing after an exam assists students in verbalizing their thinking.
Analyzing Summative Assessments
It is important to analyze assessments in order to determine progress that students' are making. For example, if the results of an assessment show that one or two students are struggling with the vocabulary words, the teacher becomes aware of their difficulty in learning the words or word relationships. On the other hand, if the whole class performs poorly, it indicates that there was most likely something done in the classroom that simply didn't resonate with the students.
